Radio-Marking Bears

The SBP captures and fits GPS-equipped radio collars to approximately XX brown bears in Scandinavia each year. This maintains a 'sample population' of about XX bears each year which researchers utilize to answer an array of research, management, and conservation related questions. We are proud to have lead the way in developing and implementing state-of-the-art capture and tracking methods on large mammals, and will continue to capture and collar bears using our high ethical standards in the future.

Population Monitoring

The XX bears captured each year allow the SBP to monitor and ask questions about key population parameters. This includes population estimation and demographics, diet, health and disease, reproduction, mating, and fitness, home ranges, habitat use, and movement, and genetic status and population connectivity. Our methods here are wide ranging and varied. However, one common theme is working with local and national government organizations to help collect, organize, and interpret data. We couldn't do it without them.

Predation Studies

Brown bears are an omnivorous predator and, although their diet varies, they can have a big impact on their prey populations. Bears in Scandinavia primarly prey on newborn ugulates such as moose and reindeer. By placing GPS collars on bears, we are able to track them during their main predation period and search for bear-killed prey. This allows us to estimate the impact of bears on ungulate populations in Scandinavia.
